A proibição e o controle de determinadas substâncias psicoativas talvez seja um dos assuntos mais polêmicos na atualidade, não abarcando apenas áreas distintas como saúde, educação, segurança pública, política, direito etc., mas também envolvendo moralidades condicionadas por visões de mundo no que se refere à compreensão da realidade. Como a construção dos diferentes discursos e práticas sobre as drogas implica governamentalizar argumentos múltiplos às identidades de cada sujeito a partir do encadeamento lógico de áreas como química, neurobiologia, medicina, psicologia, ética, filosofia, sociologia, antropologia, história, cultura, ciências jurídicas, economia, política, dentre outras, as discussões sobre o consumo dessas substâncias acabam permeadas por relações particulares dos e entre os indivíduos, grupos e comunidades com as leis estabelecidas pelos estados que procuram corroborar um modelo de sociedade fundamentado em controles. Este artigo, que é uma revisão bibliográfica resultante de certa genealogia das drogas oriunda da minha tese de doutorado defendida junto ao Programa de Estudos Pós-graduados em Ciências Sociais – PEPGCS da Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo – PUC/SP intitulada “Drogas e biopolítica: Uma genealogia da redução de danos”, tem como objetivo debater o tratamento do consumo de drogas na modernidade, no intuito não somente de refletir sobre esse assunto, mas de desconstruir alguns mitos, sobretudo conceituais e históricos, recorrentes tanto nos saberes fundamentados no senso comum quanto no campo científico. Desse modo, constatamos que a seleção de substância psicoativas proibidas ou autorizadas, inclusive sob prescrição médica, são estabelecidas de forma arbitrária, sem necessariamente levar em consideração os seus efeitos no corpo humano, resultando em critérios subjetivos que negam a soberania dos indivíduos sobre o seu corpo, delegando esse tipo de competência ao Estado, que opera por meio do direito legitimado pela medicina moderna.
