Introdução: A internação do bebê na Unidade de Terapia Intensiva Neonatal (UTIN) é um evento inesperado que repercute especialmente na rotina da mãe, pois, ao acompanhar a criança, distancia-se de suas atribuições e vivencia uma rotina cansativa e desgastante. Esta rotina é também caracterizada por poucas oportunidades para realização de atividades que minimizem o estresse inerente à condição de ter uma criança hospitalizada nesta Unidade. Estratégias de cuidado como forma de promover a saúde têm sido desenvolvidas, dentre as quais um salão de beleza destinado às mães dos bebês na UTIN. Objetivo: Conhecer a percepção das mães acerca da utilização do salão de beleza durante a internação do bebê na UTIN. Método: Estudo de abordagem qualitativa, realizado com 17 mães de bebês internados na UTIN de uma maternidade em Belo Horizonte/MG. Os dados foram coletados por meio do grupo focal e analisados de acordo com a análise de conteúdo. Resultados: O salão de beleza é uma estratégia que possibilita ampliar o cuidado ofertado ao recém-nascido e às mães. Ao frequentar o salão, as mães realizam atividades de autocuidado significativas, bem como qualificam a forma como realizam essas atividades. O ambiente favorece a socialização e propicia sentimentos como bem-estar, melhora da autoestima e redução do estresse. Conclusão: O estudo permitiu conhecer a percepção das mães sobre a utilização do salão de beleza e, assim, identificar a importância deste recurso para este público, que pode ser incorporado por outras instituições de saúde. Sugere-se que sejam realizados estudos posteriores para complementar esses achados.
