Introdução: Os estudos envolvendo as crianças e seus modos de vida têm crescido progressivamente, embora ainda insuficientes. Estudiosos da infância buscam compreender os modos de ser criança através do cotidiano e dos contextos específicos das culturas às quais pertencem, buscando a desuniversalização da infância como normativa. As crianças africanas, por sua vez, são postas como “fora do lugar”, por não seguirem os padrões e normas das crianças europeias e norte-americanas. No intuito de contribuir para a mudança deste paradigma, o presente artigo consiste em trazer para a discussão o ser criança em uma comunidade localizada na periferia de uma cidade de Moçambique, sul do continente africano. Objetivos: descrever e discutir as relações e dinâmicas de socialização infantis. Método: etnografia com duração de cinco meses na Cidade da Matola, Moçambique; para o presente artigo, será apresentada uma narrativa para discussão e análise. Discussão: as crianças moçambicanas possuem tarefas e responsabilidades pautadas na divisão social do trabalho. Entre suas atividades, sejam estas domésticas, comunitárias ou escolares, há o espaço para o brincar. O lúdico e o riso permeiam o imaginário e os mundos infantis, produzindo formas de ser, estar e atuar no mundo que partilham e ao qual pertencem. O brincar aparece nesta narrativa como fundamental para o desenvolvimento e a construção de saberes e conhecimentos, agregados a valores culturais e sociais, além das responsabilizações e relações que as crianças estabelecem entre pares e com os adultos. Considerações: desconstruir os modos como as infâncias são impostas e propiciar rupturas em sua universalização são os desafios encontrados.
